Contemporary Northwest Clay Sculpture by Karen Miner

The Pacific Northwest has always been an inspiration and influence in my art. In 1998, after years
working in other media I returned to clay. There is something magical in the permanence of clay: the
way it comes from the earth as a soft and pliable substance but once fired will retain its shape for
centuries.

Each of my sculptures are hand-built, carved, cast, stretched, combined, and altered. Many different
methods are used to attain the desired results. The salmon are raku fired to create the variety of colors
and patinas. The Ravens, Sea Stars and large sculptures are high fired and can withstand winters
outdoors under most conditions.
